Hong Kong and Macau are two special administrative region (SAR) of People’s Republic of China. Basically it means both top tourist destinations are under the government of P.R. China but the two regions has its own Basic Law. It means both Hong Kong and Macau has a separate political system, capitalist economy and enjoy autonomy except for foreign policy and defense.

It benefits a tourist because one need not to have a visa to either places and could easily travel to these tourist spots for up to 90 days of stay. And so, visitors of Hong Kong often times have in their itinerary to set foot on Macau as well. This is possible, even in just a single day.

Package Hong Kong to Macau day trips are available. The tour starts off by travelling from Hong Kong to Macau on board a jetfoil or catamaran. Upon reaching the shores of Macau, any or all of the following will be visited: ruins of St Paul, a church designed by Italians and built by Japanese Christian exiles; Macau Grand Prix Circuit; statue of Kum lam, Goddess of Mercy; Macau Tower, 11th highest tower in the world and A-Ma Temple, a chapel built in 1488 and Macau Casino. Standard rates are 110.67 US dollars for an adult or child.

The advantage of package tours is that one needs only to pay once and enjoy the trip together with other tourists, under the directions of a tour guide. The disadvantage is no freedom, one is always told what to do, where to go, what to eat, where to eat, so on and so forth.

Thus, there are some who prefer to be the boss of their own time when on a Hong Kong to and fro Macau day trip. First, he/she needs to take a Turbojet from Hong Kong Island’s Macau Ferry. Departures are every 15 minutes. Depending on the chosen boat accommodation, lowest rate is between 138 to 275 HK$. Those coming from Kowloon need to embark on First Ferry at Tsimshatsui China Ferry Terminal. Interval between trips is 30 minutes and costs from 137 to 275 HK$.

Upon reaching Macau, shuttle buses owned by casinos can be boarded for free and head off to respective casinos like Sands, Wynn, MGM Grand or Venetian. If casinos are not part of one’s Macau-trip, then a tourist needs to pay MOP3.2 if headed to any part within the city and MOP4.2 for Taipa and Coloane Island. Taxi rates start at MOP 13. Choices of destinations are limitless, may it be Fisherman’s Wharf, Wynn, New Lisboa, Taipa Island, Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, Monte Fortress, Macau Museum and/or Rua de Felicidade.

At the end of the day, when one considers his/her day trip is done and decides to go back in Hong Kong, he/she just needs to head off to ferry terminal, depart on TurboJet and arrive at Shun Tak Centre of Hong Kong Island.
