10 Top Destinations in Kowloon, Hong Kong

Kowloon is common name referring to Kowloon Peninsula and New Kowloon of Hong Kong. With land area of 47 square kilometers, it is one of the most densely populated places in planet considering its population of 2.1 million people.

Like a silver lining in a blue streak, Kowloon’s congestion of people led to existence of places to shop, eat and sleep. This made Kowloon an area for tourists. And when there are tourists, there will always be tourist destinations. The top places to visit are listed below.

Kowloon Walled City Park. Part of Hong Kong history is a place called Kowloon Walled City, a trade outpost that became a military fort, residence to 2,000 inhabitants until demolished. An area where the Walled City used to exist is now a 31,000 square meter park with eight landscape features and street names, inscribed stones and old wells from the Walled City.

Wong Tai Sin Temple. It is one of the most famous shrines in Hong Kong. It is dedicated to Wong Tai Sin or the Great Immortal Wong. Located at north of Kowloon.

Tsim Sha Tsui. An urbanized area in tucked in south of Kowloon. Geographically situated as a cape on tip of Kowloon Peninsula, it is a major tourist hub with abundant shops, restaurants and museums. The area also has the highest concentration of hotels in the whole Hong Kong.

Temple Street Night Market. A daily evening event wherein cheap merchandise and food items are displayed by almost a hundred colorfully lighted stalls on Temple street. Market starts at 2pm but its after dusk that people, especially tourists, flock. So busy is the street that it has to be closed from traffic.

Fruit Market. It is wholesaling fruits at Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon. It is not only what is sold that is a tourist destination but also the building used by the sellers. It is a pre-world war II two storey brick and stone building.

Ladies Market. Sold at Tung Choi Street are women’s clothing, accessories and cosmetics. Open daily from noon to 12 noon to 12 midnight.

Bird Garden. Hundreds of songbirds in cages can be seen at this market located on other side of Nathan Road. Open from 10 am to 6 pm.

Goldfish Market. Various tropical or marine fish are sold near the MTR train station. Aquarium equipments are also available. Open very early in the morning.
Museums. Found at Tsim Sha Tsui East are three museums. Hong Kong Museum of History preserves the historical and cultural heritage of the city. Hong Kong Science Museum is a science-themed museum. Famous is a real but stationary car in which visitors can attempt to drive in a simulation. Last on the area is Hong Kong Museum of Art exhibits paintings, calligraphy and sculpture.

Avenue of Stars. Patterned after Hollywood Walk of Fame, this avenue commemorating Hong Kong film industry celebrities, is located along Victoria Harbor waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui. Found at this avenue are handprints and autograph of director John Woo and sculpture of actor Bruce Lee.

The places a tourist can go to at Kowloon is endless. Not discussed does not mean they are non favorable, but Clock Tower, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, Hong Kong Observatory, Kowloon Park, Nathan Road, Ocean Terminal and Star Ferry are so close with those mentioned that a tourist may not know he/she is already at a tourist spot.
